The formula behind the numbers
This calculator uses the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) metabolic equation for walking, the same model used in exercise physiology labs:
Speed is in metres per minute and grade is the incline as a decimal. VO₂ (ml/kg/min) divided by 3.5 gives your MET intensity, and calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200.
Why your step count looks low on a walking pad
Phones and smartwatches count steps from arm swing and torso motion. While you type at a desk, that motion is tiny, so trackers can miss 60–80% of walking-pad steps.
