How the steps-to-calories calculation works
There is no single "calories per step" number — the honest answer depends on your weight, your stride and your pace. This tool combines three well-established models instead of a flat multiplier:
- Steps → distance. Your stride length is estimated from height (≈ 0.414 × height, tuned by sex). Distance = steps × stride.
- Pace → intensity. The ACSM walking metabolic equation converts your speed into oxygen cost (VO₂), which becomes a MET value.
- Intensity → calories. Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200, multiplied by the time your steps represent.
Why weight and pace matter so much
Moving more mass costs more energy, so body weight scales calories almost linearly. Pace matters because walking faster raises the oxygen cost per minute and covers the same steps in less time at a higher intensity. That is why "10,000 steps = 500 calories" is a myth for most people — the real figure is usually 300–450 kcal.
